A Beginner's Guide to Transifiguration

Transfiguration is the
branch of magic that deals with: changing one thing into another, transfering or switching
parts of objects, altering things, and conjuring things. This is some of the most
difficult magic there is.
The proper use of a wand is essential to most
transfiguration, as is very good concentration. Incantations are not always needed
for this branch of magic; but beginners will find that the spells that do use incantations
are easier for them to perform since they have not yet mastered the use of a wand.
For an example, the simple spell that transfigures a
match into a needle. This spell, while still requiring good wandwork, does use an
incantation: Flammeus Tailora. It is thus easier to perform, and an excellent
beginners' project.
Page 2, Chapter 1:
Transfiguration is as mentioned before, largely wandwork; and there are
many different styles for the different types of spells. However, for the
beginner, there is one basic pattern: First, raise your wand to prepare for
the spell; then aim from above and concentrate hard; finally, lower your
wand, pointing at the object, and perform the spell (meaning either say the
necessary incantation, or do the particular wand flourish that your teacher
will show you).
This is the trickiest part of this branch of magic. Mostly this
is because
of the complex relationship of the wand movement to the effect of the spell.
Every little twitch of the wand can cause a variation unless the caster is
very practiced; otherwise it can cause serious if not fatal mistakes in the
result. This is particularly apparent with transfiguring live creatures, but
those spells are slightly more advanced. The reason behind this is: the
magical energy field of the wand can be incorrectly channeled to the object,
causing a distorted magical wave which in turn causes the object to mutate in
a sometimes unexpected manner.
